If Israel and the Palestinian Arabs are not prepared to compromise enough to bring about the creation of the State of Palestine in the Land of Israel, the international community should go ahead and recognize the existence of such a state, thereby making its birth a fait accompli. This recommendation to forcefully impose the will of the world upon Israel was made Saturday by European Union foreign policy czar Javier Solana. The Spaniard - who last month became the first senior European diplomat to meet publicly with a member of the Hizb'allah...[ More] |
Pentagon official says move will allow testing of defense missile on longer range than Mediterranean. Israel will soon test an Arrow interceptor missile on a US missile range in the Pacific Ocean in a joint exercise that also will involve three US missile defense systems, a top US general said on Tuesday. Army Lieutenant General Patrick O'Reilly, director of the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency, said the test will allow Israel to measure its advanced Arrow system against a target with a range of more than 1,000 km too long for previous Arrow test sites in the eastern Mediterranean...[ More] |
Palestinian Authority (PA) senior official and head of its negotiations department, Saeb Erekat, has said in a detailed interview with an Arabic newspaper that no Jews should be permitted to stay in a Palestinian state, that Palestinians have an "absolute right" to the eastern half of Jerusalem and that, as Israel's negotiating positions have weakened and been concessionary over the years, the Palestinians should agree to nothing now and allow Israel to concede still more. Erekat's remarks in an interview with Jordanian daily, Al-Dustour...[ More] |
Iran is slowing down the manufacture of the Shehab-3 surface missile in favor of mass production of the more accurate two-stage 2,000-kilometer range Sejil II ballistic missile powered with solid fuel, which was successfully tested on May 20, DEBKAfile's military and Iranian sources report. More than 1,000 new Sejil IIs are projected to come off production lines in five years, at the rate of 200 a year. Western sources say the Iranians are over-ambitious and can deliver no more than 10-15 missiles a year at present, although with a huge multi-billion dollar investment they might raise output to 30...[ More] |
Two Sa'ar-5 class Navy ships reportedly crossed through the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea on Tuesday to beef up Israel's naval presence in the Red Sea. The passage of the ships comes several weeks after a Dolphin-class Navy submarine passed through the waterway for the first time. One of the ships, the Hanit, already crossed the canal both ways in June, in what an Egyptian source said was the first case of a large Israeli warship using the strategic waterway, AFP reported...[ More] |
In the future Israeli civilians will be warned about missile attacks through their cellular phones. Code Red (early warning radar system) to your cellular device? This will become a reality two years from now, according to the plans of the Home Front Command. For the past year, the IDF Home Front Command has been working on warning civilians of rocket attacks via cellular devices. The command's Cellular Broadcasting Technology was already successfully tested in the nationwide exercise, Turning Point 3, held 6 weeks ago...[ More] |
US Vice President Joe Biden recently said in a pre-taped interview with ABC's George Stephanoupolos: "Look, Israel can determine for itself - it's a sovereign nation - what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else... What we believe is in the national interest of the United States, which we, coincidentally, believe is also in the interest of Israel and the whole world... Look, we cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do." Does this mean that Obama's administration has finally realized that Israel was right about Iran all along and that the policy of appeasement of Iran has gruesomely failed?...[ More] |
Israel may have already started a war against Iran's nuclear program - not with bunker busting bombs and cruise missiles, but with computers. Defense analysts believe Israel has been targeting the Islamic Republic's computer networks, to gather intelligence on the nuclear program and also to launch cyber attacks against it. "This has become a very important area in Israeli strategy, and it has to be taken into account," said Alon Ben David, an Israeli defense specialist. "It has become a more and more important element both for intelligence gathering but also for aggressive operations."...[ More] |
I began with the personal questions. You are short-tempered, I hurled at him; you have fits of rage. It's true that I am short-tempered, Uzi Arad replied, but I lose patience because of the importance I attach to things. Because I am not cynical. It is important for me to have a high level of professionalism in the Prime Minister's Office and for high standards to be the criterion. I am not a born elitist, but it is important to me that we have a government that sets criteria of superb achievement. You are an advocate of brute force, I threw at him. Me? Brute force? He smiled...[ More] |
One of the main obstacles in previous peace-making efforts has been the issue of dividing Jerusalem and control over the Temple Mount. Muslim denial of Judaism's historical and religious ties to Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, the Waqf's illegal construction there, and the violent response to Jewish activities there present an obstacle to peace-making efforts. Both Israel and the Palestinians lay claim to Jerusalem and its holy sites. Israel maintains security and legal control over the Temple Mount while the Muslim Waqf has religious, economic, administrative, and some security control there...[ More] |
Researchers increasingly argue that Palestinians uninterested in statehood. Do the Palestinians want a state? This question sounds like a provocative one. Isn't it patently clear that the Palestinian national movement aspires to realize its goals by establishing a Palestinian state? Isn't it patently clear that the ethos of political sovereignty has guided the dreams and struggles of the Palestinian people for ages? Well, no. It's not patently clear. More and more Mideast affairs researchers are today willing to respond to the question about whether the Palestinians want a state with a "no." Some of them offer a hesitant "no," while others offer a resounding "no."...[ More] |
The US State Department has confirmed that as many as 1,350 Iraqi Palestinians - once well-treated guests of Saddam Hussein and now estranged from Iraqi society - will be resettled in the US, mostly in southern California, starting this fall, the Christian Science Monitor reported. It will be the largest-ever resettlement of Palestinian refugees into the US - and welcome news to the Palestinians who fled to Iraq after 1948, but who have had a tough time since Hussein was ousted in 2003...[ More] |
