Imagine what Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu would have said following Tuesday's fatal terrorist attack near Hebron had he been opposition leader and not prime minister. He would be saying that the attack proved that Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas had no control... [Read More]

BUSHEHR, Iran - Iranian and Russian engineers began loading fuel into Iran's first nuclear power plant on Saturday, a major milestone as Teheran forges ahead with its atomic program despite UN sanctions. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Wednesday that there was no reason why building should not restart in the major West bank settlement after a 10-month freeze expires next month. 6. On whose side is Obama?
President Obama's defense of the right of Muslims to build a mosque and Islamic center in New York City turned the issue into one of religious freedom. That was wrong. Obama's first priority - like that of every national leader - is to speak for his country and on its behalf. Obama's refusal to do so, his insinuation that questions raised about a proposed Islamic mega-center near the site of the 9/11 attacks... [Read More]

 8. The Only Permissible Hatred?
The chairman of Finland's branch of Amnesty International, Frank Johansson, wrote in his blog at a Finnish newspaper that Israel is a "scum state." It makes me recall a British ambassador who used a nastier word at a dinner party a couple of years back. And I've heard from several diplomats equivalent things over the years. Isn't it something that in this day of Political Correctness and multiculturalism and ... [Read More]

A natural "bioremediation" technique developed by biologists at an Israeli university may hold the key to the final, difficult steps of the billion dollar oil spill cleanup in the wake of the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Professors Eugene Rosenberg and Eliora Ron from Tel Aviv University (TAU) use naturally occurring oil-munching bacteria, grown at the TAU lab, to clean hard-to-reach oil pockets that are produced when... 1. Israeli officer killed in clash on Israel-Lebanon border
During the grave incident in the North, Lt. Col. (res.) Dov Harari was killed, and Cpt. (res.) Ezra Lakia was critically wounded. Maj. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot called it an "initiated and provocative action by the Lebanese army, without any provocation from our territory. Full responsibility lies on the Lebanese army." Lt. Col. (res.) Dov Harari (45) from Netanya was shot and killed by Lebanese military gunfire during a grave incident... [Read More]

 2. Tehran admits access to nuclear, missile technology
The statement by parliament speaker Ali Larijani July 31 that Iran can obtain nuclear and missile technology is theclosest any Iranian official has come so far to admitting his country is within reach of acquiring a nuclear weapon, DEBKAfile's military sources report. Further turning up the heat on Washington, the foreign ministry in Tehran announced Sunday, Aug. 1, that the three American hikers detained a year ago... [Read More]

 3. Arab League endorses direct talks
Arab League foreign ministers on Thursday authorized the Palestinian Authority to enter into direct negotiations with Israel, but left it up to PA President Mahmoud Abbas to decide on the timing. Jerusalem immediately welcomed the decision, taken at a special meeting in Cairo, with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu issuing a statement saying he was "prepared to begin direct and honest discussions with the Palestinian... 4. 'We will resume suicide attacks'
The Islamic Jihad organization said on Sunday that it has decided to resume suicide attacks against Israel from the West Bank. The threat came in response to attacks launched by IAF planes on the Gaza Strip following the firing of rockets on Israel in the past few days. The group, however, admitted that it has become very difficult to launch suicide attacks out of the West Bank because of security... [Read More]

 5. Putin's War on Israel
Now that another Middle East war seems imminent, concerns are growing about the new powerful weapons that are available to Palestinian terrorists. It appears to be virtually unknown that these weapons are being steadily supplied by Putin’s Russia. In the present atmosphere of the everlasting "reset" of relations between the U.S. and Russia, it is not difficult for the Kremlin to camouflage its arming of terrorist... [Read More]

The World Alliance of the Evangelical Lutheran Church has elected a new man at the top: 59-year-old Munib A. Younan (photo), a Jerusalem-born "Palestinian refugee," bishop of the "Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land" (the Church uses the term Holy Land mostly for when it doesn't wish to express the politically incorrect word "Israel). 9. What will Hamas do if direct peace talks take off?
The impression from the weekend's events was that neither Israel nor Hamas was interested in escalating the situation, and both are looking for ways to lower the flame and restore the unofficial cease-fire on the Gaza Strip border since the end of Operation Cast Lead about a year and a half ago. On Friday a Grad Katyusha rocket fired from Gaza landed in Ashkelon, causing no injuries. It is not clear who was behind ... [Read More]

 1. 'For peace, you have to meet directly'
A day before a critical meeting of Arab League Foreign Ministers in Cairo to discuss whether to support direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, visiting Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos sent a clear European message Wednesday that it was time now to enter direct talks. The officials were referring to a rocket, which was initially reported to be a Qassam, that had failed... [Read More]

The European Union formally adopted new energy sanctions against Iran Monday which target the country's energy, banking, and foreign trade sectors. 6. Iran's Proxy Powder Keg
July 12, 2010 marked the fourth anniversary of Israel's Second Lebanon War. In the intervening years, Hezbollah has made significant political and military gains in Lebanon. The rise in the paramilitary terrorist organization is likely due to three key factors: to Israel's failure in 2006 to completely destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure, the perceived weakness of the Obama administration as a result of its appeasement of Iran and... 7. Israeli appeasement of Turkey begets four flotilla probes
The Netanyahu government's decision to send back to Ankara the four flotilla boats used by the Turkish IHH terrorist sponsors of Hamas was Israel's fourth gesture of abject appeasement in a week to Ankara, which continues to whip up anti-Israel agitation in line with its undisguised hostility towards the Jewish state, DEBKAfile's military sources report. The Islam-orientated government of Recep Erdogan ... [Read More]

 8. Missile shield: Is Israel safe?
Defense officials are still euphoric over the successful test of the Iron Dome anti-rocket system. I do not wish to rain on their parade, yet nonetheless it is important for Israel's citizens to realize that the system's capabilities are still far from realizing the hopes they pin on it. Technologically, Iron Dome operates even more effectively than its planners predicted. However, it will be hard to assess the ... [Read More]

In Israel, meanwhile, the home-made Iron Dome defense system against short- and medium-range ... [Read More]

 10. Israel as the Ram in the Thicket
There is a continuum of anti-Israel rhetoric. One end of the continuum is marked by hate toward Israel and Jews rooted in deeply hostile beliefs about the nature of the Jewish people. The other end is marked by polite de-legitimization through an obsession with Israeli policies and silence about the behavior of its adversaries. The hateful end of the continuum is occupied by anti-Israel extremists in the Middle East... [Read More]
